Syracuse Mayor Matthew J. Driscoll received the 'Communication & Leadership Award' from Sam Mehta, DTM, District 65 Governor and member of the Syracuse, NY based Empire Statesmen Toastmasters Club. The prestigious 'Communication & Leadership Award' is presented to a non-Toastmaster, who is an outstanding communicator or a leader, usually a media person, state or local politician, or a business person. District 65 of Toastmasters International consisted of 98 clubs with 1900+ members, and is is located in New York State, between Utica in the east, Buffalo in the west, Binghamton in the south and Oswego in the north.

Members of Empire Statesmen recently attended the District 65 Spring Conference in Rochester, NY where they attended workshops and heard from Jim Key, the 2003 Toastmasters International World Champion Public Speaker. Attendees from Empire Statesmen included: Ed Parmenter, Ruth Parmenter, Pat Costello, Sam Mehta, Robin Pulverenti, Kelvin Ringold, Sr., Timothy Shea, John Sleeth and Nancy Sleeth
At the conference, members from Empire Statesmen received the District 65 Triple Crown Award for completing three Toastmasters educational awards for public speaking and/or leadership projects during the fiscal year.

Presidential Citation - August, 2015
Distinguished Toastmaster Sam Mehta was presented the highest honor given in Toastmasters International, the President Citation, during the annual Toastmaster International convention at the Hall of Fame ceremony on Thursday, August 13, 2016. The citation is presented to those Toastmasters who have shown continual support and dedication to the organization.

It was a pleasure and privilege to have finally met in person, my hero and 2006 Noble Peace Prize laureate, Muhammad Yunus at the Toastmasters International Convention in Las Vegas on Friday, August 14, 2015. Muhammad Yunus was the recipient of Toastmasters International “Golden Gavel” – the highest honor given to a non-Toastmaster. On March 5, 2003, I had the honor to lead an NGO [non-governmental organization] team and present at the United Nations [UN] headquarters in New York City on the subject of “Microcredit - A Step Towards Uplifting Women” at the 48th session of the UN, on the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).

Her life is an inspiring example of what can be achieved when following one's dream.
